Lord, you have assigned me my portions and my cup.”

Psalms 16:5

It is difficult for us to suffer, it is more difficult for us to see others suffer, and especially the ones we love. It can be puzzling to us why God blesses some but not others or why those seemingly undeserving should suffer time and time again. Yet others we may see blessing from a righteous life or we see the folly of a fool.

Whatever the cause or effect, one thing is for sure, God has assigned to us our portion. The portion being that amount of blessing and suffering we receive in our lifetime and the cup being that which will contain it all. We are the cup formed from clay and God is the potter. God has promised he wont give to us a portion we cannot bear.

No trial has overtaken you that is not faced by others. And God is faithful: He will not let you be tried beyond what you are able to bear, but with the trial will also provide a way out so that you may be able to endure it.

1 Corinthians 10:13

God designed and formed us and he knows what our cup can bear. We bear our burden inside the cup God has assigned. Some are bigger than others. Some are stronger than others. Some may grow stronger and others weaker. Some may be made stronger then filled with trials. If the burden is too great, it runs over or the cup crumbles under pressure.

We see this in the world when the world tries to construct their own cup, relying on their own intellect, passions, or physical strength. But he who trusts in God does not make their own cup because the cup is assigned from God as the Psalm says. This cup will never over flow or break because he who owns it will mount up on wings like an eagle, he will run and never grow weary. When he drinks from his own cup for joy or for sorrow, he can rest in the shadow of the presence of his almighty God.
