“He must make restitution in full, add a fifth to the value to it and give it all to the owner on the day he presents his guilt offering.”
Leviticus 6:5
When we focus on our sin we repent and ask for forgiveness. But, there is a tendency to just leave it right there so that we feel we are “off the hook”. Yet, have you found yourself back in the same ugly place asking for forgiveness again? A thief is sorry he is going to jail but not sorry he stole. Are we truly repentant? Shouldn’t that reflect in our actions?
This is why I believe God required the one who wronged to pay back what he took plus add a fifth. This way, there is now a cost to the person who wronged the other and this is in addition to presenting his guilt offering.
What in addition do we do to make right our wrongs? What do we do to go beyond restitution and make a statement that we are truly repentant? If we just take God’s grace and run away until the next failure, we make his grace cheap. Don’t water down his blood. Make it count and truly examine your heart. Build barriers between you and sin and remove barriers to God. Add a fifth to your sacrifice. Restitution is not a sacrifice unless it cost something to you.
