Below are a few prophecies that foretell the coming of Jesus. Jesus who is the Messiah. This is not an exhaustive list. At the bottom are links you can use for additional research.
Regarding Spiritual Warfare:
Crush Satan:
Genesis 3:15
“And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.”
– This is the first prophetic scripture regarding Jesus. In this verse, God speaks to the serpent (who is Satan) that Jesus (the seed of woman) will crush the serpent’s head which is the ultimate victory of Jesus the Messiah over evil in this world.
Jesus will swallow death forever:
Isaiah 25:8
“He will swallow up death forever!
The Sovereign LORD will wipe away all tears.
He will remove forever all insults and mockery
against his land and people.
The LORD has spoken!“
– By dying on the cross, Jesus eliminates the fear of death for all who put their faith in him. The promise of eternal salvation.
Jesus’ kingdom to destroy all others and reign forever as king:
Daniel 2:40
“Following that kingdom, there will be a fourth one, as strong as iron. That kingdom will smash and crush all previous empires, just as iron smashes and crushes everything it strikes.”
– This foretells Jesus’ second coming. When Jesus will return and establish his kingdom here on earth.
Star of Jacob will rise to crush enemies:
Numbers 24:17
“I see him, but not here and now.
I perceive him, but far in the distant future.
A star will rise from Jacob;
a scepter will emerge from Israel.
It will crush the foreheads of Moab’s people,
cracking the skulls of the people of Sheth.“
– The eventual destruction of God’s enemies will happen after Jesus’ second coming, but a star, that is Jesus, has already risen from Jacob.
Regarding His Kingdom
Ruler to come through Judah:
Genesis 49:10
The scepter will not depart from Judah, nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet, until he to whom it belongs shall come and the obedience of the nations shall be his.
– The authority of being the ruler belongs to Jesus because he ascended into heaven and will never die. The scepter will not depart from Jesus.
David’s sons to sit on throne forever:
Psalms 132:11, 13-14
The LORD swore an oath to David, a sure oath he will not revoke: ‘One of your own descendants I will place on your throne.’
For the LORD has chosen Zion, he has desired it for his dwelling, saying,This is my resting place for ever and ever; here I will sit enthroned, for I have desired it.
– There are many places that refer to David’s throne lasting forever. Jesus was a direct descendant of David and Jesus’ kingdom has no end.
Jesus will judge all nations:
Isaiah 2:4
He will judge between the nations and will settle disputes for many peoples. They will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation will not take up sword against nation, nor will they train for war anymore.
– Jesus will be the sole judge between nations, and there will no longer be any need for weapons. Where this is exactly in the end times is unclear, but we know it is after the second coming.
His government and peace will have no end:
Isaiah 9:6-7
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the LORD Almighty will accomplish this.
– The Prince of Peace: Isaiah describes a child who will be born, and he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace. Jesus fulfilled this passage by fulfilling the sin offering and will reign for ever.
The root of Jesse:
Isaiah 11:1-2,9-10
A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a Branch will bear fruit. The Spirit of the LORD will rest on him— the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of might, the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the LORD
In that day the Root of Jesse will stand as a banner for the peoples; the nations will rally to him, and his resting place will be glorious. In that day the Lord will reach out his hand a second time to reclaim the surviving remnant of his people from Assyria, from Lower Egypt, from Upper Egypt, from Cush, from Elam, from Babylonia, from Hamath and from the islands of the Mediterranean.
– The root of Jesse is a reference to David and the David’s lineage. Jesse is the father of David and Jesus came from David’s lineage. The Spirit of God rested upon Jesus when he was baptized by John the Baptist thus fulfilling this scripture. The nations have rallied to Jesus because the gospel is being preached all over the world.
He will bring justice to nations:
Isaiah 42:1 will bring justice to nations
“Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen one in whom I delight; I will put my Spirit on him, and he will bring justice to the nations.
– Again, very similar to the one above. God is pleased with Jesus and has chosen him. Jesus said that he came to earth to do the will of the Father.
A witness to the people:
Isaiah 55:4
See, I have made him a witness to the peoples, a ruler and commander of the peoples.
– Jesus was a witness to the people and these events are recorded in the books of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. The Jews do not accept Jesus as the Messiah because he did not come to conquer the Roman Empire. But that was not his goal then, it will be his goal when he returns.
Micah 5:2
“But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times.”
– Micah predicts that the Messiah will come from a small town called Bethlehem. Indeed, Jesus was born in Bethlehem.
A righteous branch:
Jeremiah 23:5
“The days are coming,” declares the LORD, “when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, a King who will reign wisely and do what is just and right in the land.”
– Jeremiah predicts that the Lord will raise up someone to reign who will be righteous and always do what is right. The only person this fits is Jesus Christ. Plus, this is fulfillment of God’s promise to establish David’s throne forever.
Ancient of Days:
Daniel 7:13-14
“In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man,[fn] coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence. He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all nations and peoples of every language worshiped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed.
– Jesus said that God the Father had given him authority in heaven and earth. In fact, Satan knew this when he tested Jesus. The disciples witnessed Jesus going up into glory and his dominion is everlasting.
Palm Sunday foretold:
Isaiah 63:1
Who is this who comes from Edom,
from the city of Bozrah,
with his clothing stained red?
Who is this in royal robes,
marching in his great strength?
“It is I, the LORD, announcing your salvation!
It is I, the LORD, who has the power to save!”
Zechariah 9:9
Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout, Daughter Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
– Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey, symbolizing peace that his Kingdom gives. His followers spread palm branches on the ground as we rode through, shouting “Hosanna,” which is a shout of praise and acknowledgment that Jesus is the Messiah.
